Background

Members of the small Maf family are basic region leucine zipper (bZIP) proteins that can function as transcriptional activators or repressors. Small Maf proteins can switch from transcriptional repressors to activators, depending on the proteins with which they form heterodimers. MAF chromosomal abnormalities are found in some types of multiple melanomas. Juvenile-onset pulverulent cateracts and congenital cerulean cataract 4 (CCA4) are caused by defects in MAF
