Background

Neurofilaments usually contain three intermediate filament proteins: L, M, and H which are involved in the maintenance of neuronal caliber. The extra mass and high charge density that distinguish the neurofilament proteins from all other intermediate filament proteins are due to the tail piece extensions. This region may form a charged scaffolding structure suitable for interaction with other neuronal components or ions. This antibody provides an early marker of neuronal migration and differentiation in human fetal development yielding Golgi like images without the disadvantages of lack of selectivity and poor specificity of the Golgi technique. In specifically delineating cell bodies and dendrites, this antibody can be used to trace the inside out gradient of neuron production and differentiation. Pathologic conditions, such as under nutrition affect this antibody visualized soma size and dendritic arborization.
