Background

Early endosomal autoantigen 1 (EEA1) bears an FYVE (Fab1p-YOPB-Vps27p-EEA1) domain which is an approximately 80 amino acid double-zinc binding motif that binds to PtdIns(3)P (phosphatidylinositol 3-phosphate). The FYVE domain is found in proteins involved in intracellular signaling, membrane trafficking, and cytoskeletal rearrangement. EEA1 binds to early endosomal membranes that contain PtdIns(3)P and plays a role in the docking and fusion of early endosomes. Alternative names for EEA1 include endosome-associated protein p162, Zinc finger FYVE domain-containing protein 2, and ZFYVE2.
